Report Writing Training

How to plan, structure and populate the reports you need to write

Why this course?

In many companies and organisations, reports are a key tool for enabling and supporting critical decision-making. If you’re proposing a course of action or giving feedback, the report you write will be its best advocate.

But the problem is that few of us know what the best-practice techniques, structure and methodologies are when it comes to report writing, and fewer of us are confident that our report is as powerful as it could be.

Course outcomes:

This course is designed for people who are required to write reports: factual, instructional, persuasive or even technical. It concentrates on the skills you need to make the writing process easier and the resulting document more effective. It is also structured to provide the delegate with the knowledge to:

  • Tailor each report to a specific audience’s needs.
  • Optimally structure the document.
  • Master easy-to-learn report-writing techniques.
  • Choose words that support the message and don’t distract the reader.
  • Present information that is factual rather than biased.
  • Achieve a balance between comprehensive and concise reports.
  • Produce reports that are error-free.
  • Edit the first draft for maximum impact.

8 key content areas:

  1. Understanding the purpose/s of a report
  2. Identifying the report’s main objective
  3. Deciding on the best starting point and approach
  4. Planning the report for optimum results
  5. Understanding the structure of the report
  6. Using an appropriate style of writing
  7. Choosing the best methods of presentation
  8. Knowing how to proof-read and edit the report

Please note: final course content may deviate from that described above.

The course is filled with useful tips, tricks and extra notes, as well as 10 writing, editing and structural exercises – each with practical facilitation, feedback and guidance.
